Fuel, Inflation and the price of eggs in China
When I was growing up we used a phrase when someone got way off subject in a conversation, “What does that have to do with the price of eggs in China?” Ironically, today the price of eggs in China and many other factors are affecting the cost of goods and services we pay for here in the US and all across the world.
While our domestic economy is improving slowly, the prices we all pay for groceries, fuel, shipping, and practically everything else have gone up. Because there are global price increases on raw materials and finished goods brought on by events in the Middle East, inflation in China and even the tragedy in Japan, prices in the US are already inching up.
Therefore on or around the first of May, you can expect to see price increases on packaging as lower-cost inventories wear thin. How much of an increase depends on the material and the point of origin, which we are still sorting out. It is safe to say that we are looking at 2% to 4% increases for most US-made products and from 5% to 15% on many Chinese imports. There are products which are not increasing at all and a few imports that may go just slightly higher.
