Archival tissue paper is available in either buffered or unbuffered anti–tarnish materials. They are beneficial for the preservation and storage of numerous items, and great for interleaving between pages of important photographs or documents that need to be kept for long periods of time. The archival tissue paper can be reused again and again without losing its protective qualities. The more the tissue is handled, the softer it becomes.
Both buffered and unbuffered tissue papers have specific uses. Buffered tissue paper should be used on materials that will not be affected by an alkaline pH, or interaction with calcium carbonate; for example, cottons, linens, books, and black and white motion picture films. Unbuffered anti-tarnish tissue is for materials that may be negatively affected by alkalinity; such as, blueprints, jewelry, instruments, wool, silks, and color motion pictures. If you are ever unsure of what type of protective paper you need, choose unbuffered tissue paper.
