Big box\u00a0retailers such as Kroger, Costco and Target account for more than 80%\u00a0of sales since they\u00a0have expanded into the\u00a0specialty foods market. But smaller\u00a0specialty food stores continue at a\u00a020% rate even with large retailers attempting to copy their product lines. The\u00a0top-selling categories include cheese, meat, poultry and seafood along with\u00a0chips, pretzels, snacks, coffee, tea and candy.<\/p>\n
“American consumers continue to move toward specialty foods and away from mass,” says Ron Tanner, V.P.\u00a0of Philanthropy, Government and\u00a0Industry relations for the Specialty Food Association<\/a>. “Consumers are looking for foods with fewer and cleaner ingredients, and products that are made by companies with values they care about.
