CELEBRATE: PAPER BAG DAY JULY 12th

They are the retail staple, the go-to lunch sack, the gifter’s delight, and the eco-friendly option. They are often under-appreciated but are an important piece to retail business.

THE HISTORY OF PAPER BAGS

Paper bags can be traced back to 1852, when American inventor, Francis Wolle invented and patented the first paper bag machine after he and his brother founded the Union Bag and Paper Company. Their paper plant, located in Savannah, GA employed nearly 500 people and became a local tourist attraction as people would visit to witness ‘1,000 feet of paper flying by per minute’.

In 1871, Margaret E. Knight, known as the ‘mother of the grocery bag’, took the invention even further when she invented the machine that would produce paper bags with flat boxy bottoms. In 1883, Charles Stillwell further developed the design by adding pleated sides to make it easier to fold, store, and carry. And in 1912, Walter Deubener added cord handles for reinforcement and ease of carrying, which is the final version of the paper bag (or shopping bag) widely used today.
