Which job is tougher…US President or small business owner?

Small business in the United StatesIs it just me or is it really tough out there? When we think of our own businesses, our jobs, and the daily issues we are facing in this recession, can you imagine the difficulties of holding the highest office in the land? If you can’t, just ask an independent business owner in this economy!

America is certainly the home of large corporations, but many of these companies have lost their ability to manage themselves, to compete, and are too big and cumbersome to reinvent or even change. The federal government does not have a good track record in legislating business into competitiveness or efficiency either much less profitability but that is what it is going to take to save many of the nations large corporations.

Corporations are made of people. Change to be credible, lasting and significant must come from within. This is basic human nature. Corporations as well as independents need to be playing on the same team and work towards common goals which must be articulated.

I was a child of the Kennedy administration. And although that administration led the nation into the beginnings one of the worst wars and periods of civil unrest we still look back on the man, the era, and the ideas. JFK was among other things a visionary, and so apparently is our current President. I remember the challenge to put a man on the moon; I savored every moment of it (and still do). What a vision… However remember that it was prompted by the need to be competitive.

The scriptures say that “without vision the people perish”. Independent business in America does not typically enjoy the watchful eye of the President, nor are we likely to receive a bailout. What is it then that we must depend on? It is “Vision”. If you have a vision of doom and gloom, then you will likely realize just that. But if your vision is set to looking for way to compete, succeed and move forward then you will set in motion plans to do exactly that. Many times our businesses become self-fulfilling prophesies.

It is my personal belief and observation that the real emergence out of recession will come from people like you and me. The small and independent business of America will dig in, and dig out of the crises. We will work hard, stay up late, create, craft, market and take care of our customers and our businesses like no one else will.

One last thing… I do not think that President Obama has any regrets over his new position, but as an independent business owner I would gladly trade places with him.
